JAMIE'S AREA FUNDRAISER
Jamie's Area is a new space that performs multiple roles such as gallery, studio, kitchen, theatre, workshop, research lab, blog, and archive. This project emerged out of a desire to explore the politics and ideology involved in conceiving of an "alternative space" and its various manifestations in artist-run, collective-based culture. We wish to substitute a representation of our complicity in the systems that we critique rather than adopt the exteriority of an alternative. At stake is the question of what it means to be a critical art space—of its possibility—and to respond experimentally and radically to the social, economic, and political conditions by which cultural production and consumption function today in Toronto. On any given night at Jamie’s Area, you might also find bands playing, musicians sampling select records, performance-type ephemera, marathons, or film shoots.
